New York - Day 6. New Yorkers for a Day - Part 1

On our first full day together to explore New York City, we played New Yorkers for a day and explored a typical middle class residential neighborhood. (I strongly recommend this to anyone who gets tired for seeing Times Square 4 days in a row!)

New York - Day 5. New York Sunset

The view from our hotel (The New Yorker) at sunset *sigh*

New York - Day 5. Rockefeller Center and Shopping on Madison Ave

A quick photo for Saks Fifth Avenue on 5th avenue

And then to Rockefeller Center:

New York - Day 5. John's Pizzeria

After recommendations by a friend and the Frommer's Guide to New York, we finally tried John's Pizzeria. It was good, but I'm glad we didn't stand in line for an hour for this. (Yes, that was the wait the last time we tried eat there.)

New York - Day 5. Gay Pride Parade 2011

After a quick shopping trip of 5th Ave, I exited the store just in time for the Gay Pride Parade to pass. I couldn't see most of the parade since I was too far back, but the images (not necessarily caught in my pictures) brought tears to my eyes. Two women in their 50s or 60s, one most likely Indian and the other African American, holding hands as they made it through the crowd. A crowd letting an older woman in a wheelchair waving a rainbow flag through to the front. Two women in their 40s wearing headscarves and waving rainbow flags at the front of the crowd. It was amazing! Tony and I had just had a conversation the night before about how nice it was to see openly gay couples walking down the streets. Coming from Texas where gay couples sometimes won't hold hands in public, this parade was an incredible experience and maybe one of my favorites in New York thus far.

New York - Day 4. Night Out

After 4 days of walking in not-as-comfortable-as-thought shoes, we had a quick dinner at Sushi Mambo (excellent by the way) rather than the famous pizzerias in town that make you stand. Afterwards, we ended up in jeans and tennis shoes and took a cab to Amsterdam in the Upper West Side to walk the neighborhoods and look for any fun nightlife. Apparently, we're too old for loud clubs, so we walked the neighborhoods and walked the 30-something blocks back to our apartment.
